Why Your Website Needs Maintenance After Launch

Launching a new website feels like the finish line. In reality it is the start. Like a vehicle, a website keeps running best with regular servicing, and small problems are much cheaper to fix early than after something breaks.

What can go wrong without maintenance

  • Security problems. Outdated software, plugins and themes are one of the most common ways websites get hacked, defaced or used to send spam.
  • Lost data. Without regular backups, a server problem or a mistake can wipe out your content and orders.
  • Expired domain or certificate. Miss a renewal and your site can disappear or show visitors a frightening security warning.
  • Slowing down. Large images, old code and growing databases gradually make pages slower, which frustrates visitors and hurts your search rankings.
  • Out-of-date information. Old prices, phone numbers or opening hours cost you customers and trust.
“ Most website emergencies are preventable. Regular maintenance is far cheaper than recovering a hacked or broken site. ”

A simple maintenance checklist

Every month

  • Install software, plugin and security updates (after a backup).
  • Check that backups are running and stored somewhere other than the website server.
  • Test your contact forms, WhatsApp buttons and any payment or booking features.
  • Check that the site loads quickly on a mobile phone.

Every few months

  • Review your content: services, prices, team, photos and contact details.
  • Look for broken links and pages that return errors.
  • Review your search performance in Google Search Console.

Every year

  • Renew your domain name and hosting (turn on auto-renew where possible).
  • Restore a backup in a test environment to make sure it actually works.
  • Review whether your website still matches your business goals.
