For many small businesses in Mombasa, the online journey starts with a Facebook page, an Instagram account or a WhatsApp Business profile. They are free, quick to set up and your customers are already there. So do you really need a website as well?

In most cases, yes. Not to replace social media, but because the two do different jobs.

What social media does well

  • Reaching people who already follow you or your friends.
  • Sharing day-to-day updates, offers, photos and videos.
  • Quick conversations through comments and messages.
  • Running targeted adverts to specific locations and audiences.

Where a social media page falls short

  • You do not own it. The platform decides who sees your posts, can change its rules at any time, and accounts can be hacked or suspended.
  • It is hard to find on Google. When someone searches "hotel in Nyali" or "plumber in Mombasa", websites and Google Business Profiles usually appear first.
  • Information gets buried. Your prices, services, location and opening hours disappear under new posts.
  • It can look less established. For many customers, especially larger clients, corporates and tourists, a proper website is a sign that a business is serious.
“ Think of social media as your shop window on a busy street, and your website as the shop itself. ”

Using both together

The best results come from letting each channel do what it is good at. Use social media to get attention and start conversations, then send people to your website for the details: full service lists, prices or a quote form, your portfolio, directions and a WhatsApp button so they can reach you in one tap.

Your website also gives your adverts somewhere better to send people. A focused landing page usually turns more ad clicks into enquiries than a busy social media profile.

Where to start

If budget is tight, start with a simple, well-built website of a few pages and connect it to your social media and WhatsApp. You can add features like booking or online payments later. Talk to us about a website that fits your business today and can grow with it.
